Not to be confused with search engine marketing, which involves strategic paid advertising, SEO is managing a site to rank high in natural search rankings, and can be tweaked and adjusted in every place that you can touch content on your website, including the structure itself. From your site URL to the copy and the metadata, optimizing your site to be crawled by search engines, like Google, Yahoo and MSN, involves making a concerted effort when developing web content.
Unfortunately, we do not always receive the type of direction one might expect from our associated web professionals. With as much effort as it takes to ensure web content is up-to-date and accurate, many times, things like meta data and site copy are an afterthought.
Fortunately, for those with limited direction from leadership groups or perhaps lacking external agency resources, Google comes to the rescue with a series of articles. Get access to a list of their resources and discuss your processes/best practices in the comments.
1. Google 101: It is important to understand how search engings “crawl” the web, what they look for, and how they come up with their rankings.
2. Webmaster Guidelines: When building or creating content for your site, following these guidelines will assist search engines when it comes time to build rankings.
3. Ranking: For those of you that really want to get into the nitty-gritty of how search engine rankings are created.
4. Search Engine Optimization (PDF): Google’s very own guide to ensuring your site is built to be search engine friendly. From site map submission, page titles and content, this one covers it all.
